Funk-da-Bar Suspended - Announcement from the College
I have had a report from the Head Porter about Wednesday's Funk da Bar. I understand that: the music continued until 12.15am; measures to restrict the number of people in the bar were not in place or were not effective; the signing in arrangements do not seem to have worked well. I have looked and it would seem that only 38 people were signed into the bar on Wednesday. Needless to say all of this is extremely worrying.
When problems as serious as this emerge there is a danger that the College appears not to be taking effective action to ensure the orderly operation of the JCR bar. The College's licence for all its events in the JCR bar, and elsewhere on the College site, would be put in jeopardy if that were the case. As licence holder I am also personally liable should it emerge that the bar is not operating in an orderly and safe manner.
We rely upon the rules the College has put in place being observed in order that we can satisfy ourselves that the bar, and events within it, is operating effectively. On the basis of the events of Wednesday the College clearly does not currently have that reassurance to rely upon.
This is a very serious matter, and I am disappointed to be finding this reoccurrence of issues that I thought had been dealt with in previous years. Hosting ECSU run events in the bar is something the College has encouraged and supported, but without cooperation they become unsustainable.
I am therefore asking for the next Funk da Bar event (Wednesday 17th Oct I think) to be cancelled. This will make everyone properly aware of the seriousness of these issues, and also provide time for those involved with ents to reacquaint themselves with the rules the College has set and think about the procedures that need to be in place to ensure those rules are enforced and are effective.
